We were on the Carnival Miracle that sailed on July 2. Costa Maya looked like a great port to spend a day in. We unfortunately had an extremely windy day and it looked like it was going to storm very hard. Many of the shops and vendors closed early due to the weather. We found shelter in Tapas which has both an indoor restaurant and beach seating. We ordered Ceviche which had shrimp, scallops and octopus, fish tacos, bbq chicken wings, and chips and salsa. The ceviche was one of the best I have ever had. The chips and salsa were homemade. The salsa was not spicy enough for my wife so, on request, we asked for something spicier and was given habanero salsa. It was delicious. The fish tacos were also the best I have ever had. The margeritas were a bit weak, but I ordered an extra shot of tequila and sipped some and poured some into the 'rita. The sanitation and cleanliness was better than I have seen in many restaurants in the US. We ate to our hearts content and no one got sick. All in all, we made the best out of a bad weather day and enjoyed ourselves very much. I would highly recommend eating at Tapas.

Costa Maya is very nice! There is a pool and shopping area at the pier. But, you need to go to the village of Mahahaul nearby. We did a Mayan ruins tour through www.chacchobenruins.com. It is EXCELLENT and only $43 per person. They pick you up in the village and will drop you back at the pier. Comfortable vans, good roads, great conversation on the way, and a great tour!
