Cozumel on your own - From Diverearl

Cozumel is my favorite place to get away in the caribbean. It is very accessable from Houston so we go there often.

If I had only one day and wasn't going to spend it underwater I would rent a jeep or car about $50.00 and head South. The road will fork a few miles south of the cruise ship piers so take the right leg, not a hard right which will take you to the fishing marina but an angled right fork which should take you to Dzul Ha. Here you can have a drinks and do a little snorkeling or just enjoy the view. Keep going south until you get back to the main highway don't worry if you get lost on this island you just go in a big circle as there is really just one main road around the island. Stop at palancar and enjoy a beautiful beach for the price of a coke (the chips and sausa are good also). Get back to the main road take a right and keep going if you like you might stop at Parqe Punta Sur (about $15 per person) and walk up the light house then they take you in a hugh wooden truck to a lagoon to tour a beautiful marsh area spend a little time on their pictureasq beach then they truck you back to your vehicle. Now you will be heading south on the back side of Cozumel that most tourist don't even realise exist. It is by far the prettiest side os the island with nice beaches interspearsed with lava pours that last for miles. There are some great litle blow holes along this stretch to see. Stop often at the pull offs and look for turtle tracks along the beach where the hugh loggerhead and hawkbill turtles came on shore the night before to lay their eggs (usually in the summer months). My favorite place along here is Punta Morena (was destroyed by hurrican Wilma, might be rebuilt might not by the time we get the in Dec) and have a lobster lunch and a cold Fanta. Keep going and the road soon turns to the west which is towards town. On this part of the road is where the San Gervasio Ruins are found. A sign will show you where to exit to the right and it is small a but inexpensive side trip. Back on the main road go right which will soon bring you to town.

A) At the light take a left and follow this road until it curves around and when it ends you can see the ship.
B) Go straight and you will go through town (be careful on this part of your trip as STOP signs are 20 feet back from intersections) and you will dead end. Taks a left and travel along with the beach on your right and town on the left for about 10 miles until you get back to the cruise ship pier.

Be sure when you stop for fuel you tell them $30.00 NOT I REPEAT NOT fill it up. This is the one place on the island that will will will will rip you off every time. If the car dosen't hold the full amount good for you hope you didn't miss anything.

Also be sure to be careful with your stuff especially do not leave things in a car left alone that you would like to remain the primary owner of. Just like any where on earth it probably will not be there when you get back. This of course goes for all ports. Here is a link that helps plan a trip to Cozumel and there are many more. Good luck and let me know if I can help, earl.

  1. Almost all downtown roads that run north-south, parallel to the seafront, have priority. Roads running east-west must yield.
  2. Most downtown roads are one-way. Look for black and white arrow signs on corners or see which way cars are parked.
  3. Don't park on red curbs. It means no parking and the police may take your car or plates and fine you.
  4. Don't rent a scooter unless you really understand the high risk you're taking. If you do, make sure you wear a good helmet and protective clothing.
  5. Forget shiny new air-conditioned rentals. Pick an old open top VW Beetle for real fun!
  6. Enjoy your vacation but please be responsible - drinking and driving is illegal and dangerous here too.

Linda's thread

I just did a quick check of a link Susan has on the excursion page to Cozumel. (Ace Rentals) For a 12 passenger van, 9am to 3pm, it was $150......$12.50 each. Not bad for a full day of fun! It looks like we have more than 12 wanting to go. The mini-vans (7 passenger?) were $120. Insurance adds another $11.

Hertz (at the airport) has a 15 passenger for $126 daily rate. Need to find out if they would deliver.

Panchos Backyard (the original location) is a restaurant located in a lovely old building at the north end of the waterfront shopping district - a former mansion - that it shares with my favorite store - Los Cinco Soles. Panchos has good margaritas and some really wonderful food dishes.
