NOTE: Take LOTS of bug spray whichever you do, Deep Woods off or an equivalent with at least 20% DEET (not that Skintastic stuff as that doesn't keep the bugs off down there).

  • From Diverearl:

Roatan is a fairly small island so it will not take long to tour the majority of it before lunch. The east end is the least visited but mainly because most land based tourist are divers and most of the diving is based on the West End of the island. Be sure to get over to the West end for a little shopping and sight seeing ( the drive over is a beautiful part of the day ).

The bugs and biting flies are usually bad anywhere on the beach on Roatan so some kind of bug repellent is a must on this island. Most people try to use a deet free spray if they are going to dive or snorkel.

If you take a cab over to West end or anywhere else for that matter be sure to negotiate the fare before you start as they can really vary from about 5 dollars per person to 50, there is no set price like there is in Cozumel. Also the roads on a lot of the island are sand or dirt so when it rains it turns to mud quickly.

Also there is some really good food to be had while at the West End. You might check with the local dive shops at West End for suggestions to a place to eat what ever you are in the mood for. These shops are very tourist oriented and will usually treat you right where as the little souvenir shops just try to steer you towards their friends places with no regard if the food is good or bad as long as they get their cut. Again the prices can vary so look around and set all prices before you eat.

Email to/from Victor Bodden:

Hello,

We’ll be in Roatan on December 12 (we will be on the Grand Princess) of this year and are interesting in getting a quote for a tour with your company. We are interested in a canopy tour at South Shore Canopy Tours along with snorkeling, perhaps at the West End. Could you make some recommendations? We would also like enough time to do a little shopping and have lunch.

Hi Victor,

This sounds good to us. Just to be sure, the zip lining would be at the South Shore Canopy tour (and not the one at Palmetto Bay Hill), right?

We have 7 people interested in this tour, but only 3 that want to do the zip lining. Is there something near by that the other four can do while we zip line?

Thanks for your time,

Susan
